Need EBT Equipment and Services to Accept SNAP Benefits? You Need Turnkey Processing

EBT Equipment for Businesses (1)

If you run a grocery store, market, convenience store, deli, or any other business that sells foods that are eligible for Federal SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, it’s absolutely essential that you have the ability to accept these benefits. (After all – if you don’t a competitor certainly will.)

Under the Agriculture Act of 2014, most SNAP-authorized retailers are responsible for their own EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) equipment. Because there is no central Federally-approved source for EBT equipment, this means that most retailers must get their equipment and services provided by a third-party processor.

Not all third-party EBT processors are created equal, though, and many provide shoddy equipment or service with exorbitant fees to take advantage of retailers (and ultimately the SNAP program itself).

If you’re in the market for EBT equipment and you’re looking for a reliable third-party processor, look no further than Turnkey Processing. Included in the USDA’s own list of third party processors, Turnkey has an unparalleled reputation, with 5-star ratings across Google and Facebook and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

More Information about Accepting EBT Benefits

Other than hardware, what’s needed to accept EBT and SNAP benefits?

Before you can get your EBT hardware from Turnkey up and running, you’ll need to be approved to accept SNAP benefits with the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS). You can apply here: link. Once you’re approved, provide Turnkey with your FNS number to get your ready-to-use terminal in the mail.

How do I know if I’m eligible to accept SNAP benefits?

Any retailer is eligible to accept SNAP benefits, provided they sell eligible food items. Eligible food items include the following:

  • Breads, cereals, grains
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, fish, dairy, and poultry (including seafood and steak)
  • Soft drinks, candy, cookies, and ice cream

Products that are NOT eligible include the following:

  • Alcohol and tobacco
  • Foods that are eaten on-premises
  • Vitamins and medicine
  • Pet food
  • Non-food items like paper towels or soap
  • Any hot foods

Find more information at the USDA website.

Why should I accept SNAP benefits?

If you’re an eligible retailer, not accepting SNAP benefits basically amounts to turning away customers and leaving money on the table. Over 43 million people currently receive SNAP benefits in the United States, with an average benefit of just over $126.

No matter what part of the country you’re in, a significant part of the population is no doubt reliant on SNAP benefits. Accepting SNAP is not only a way to tap into a potent customer base, but also a simple way to help provide a service to the community.
